Game 1: Phillies 2, Braves 1
The Phillies defeated the Braves 2-1 in a pitchers' duel at frosty, wind-swept Water Tower Park on April 26. It was the opening Majors game of the Whitefish Bay Little League season.
Braves pitchers Connor, Evan and Alec showed good command on the mound, especially given the modest amount of practice the Braves have had to date. Connor also fielded several balls impressively from the pitcher's spot, and scored the lone Braves run by swiping third, then scampering home on an overthrow.
Some other Braves highlights:
Scott, hit by a pitch, was our first base runner of the season.
Matt beat out a single in the second inning. He also got down a solid bunt later in the game, and was narrowly thrown out at first.
Anthony ripped a sharp single in the 5th inning.
In a game short on hits, Evan, Ryan, Tyler, Alec, Connor and Nick all drew walks.
Nick started a double play in the 5th by grabbing a fly ball in the short right-field grass, then throwing to second to double up an early runner.
Liam made a fine catch of a fly ball to right field.
Will made his Braves debut.
I did not get to speak with Coach Ross after the game, but my hunch is that, after praising the effort of our boys, he would say they took too many called strikes. (Our home plate ump had a low strike zone, but he called it consistently throughout the game.)
The next Braves game will be at 3 p.m. Saturday May 1, vs. the Yankees. Look for emails this week from coaches with further details.

Braves clinch 4th place!
Everyone,
The Yankees beat the Rays Wednesday evening in a 3-2 thriller, meaning that the Braves will finish in fourth place in the regular season regardless of the outcome of our game Thursday against the Orioles.
Barring a change in the little-league tournament schedule, our first post-season game will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. against the fifth-place Rays. If we win that game our next game will be Saturday, July 11, at 2 p.m., almost certainly against the Dodgers. If we lose Tuesday, our next game will be Thursday at 4 p.m.
We split the season series with two of the three teams that will finish above us in the standings (Pirates and Phillies). If we can bring a sharp mental focus to a game, we can beat anyone in the league.

Sunday practice time change
Sunday practice at Atwater School will be from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m. rather than the previously announced 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Game Report: Pirates 14, Braves 7
The Braves fell behind big early, then battled their way back into the game, but ultimately lost to the Pirates 14-7 on a warm Saturday evening at Water Tower Park.
Pirates slugger Kyle Rogers homered twice, and the slick-fielding Pirates snuffed out potential Braves rallies in the 5th and 6th innings with strong defense.
Pirates coach Dave Arnold told me that Rogers has hit about a dozen homers this season.
While the Braves were disappointed with losing, many bright spots are worth noting from this exciting game.
Matt, our last available pitcher in uniform tonight, took the ball in the top of the 5th inning with nobody out and Pirate runners on 1st and 2nd. He struck out a batter. Then, after a walk loaded the bases, Matt induced a pop-up that Alec grabbed, and a ground-out that ended the inning.
Entering the bottom of the third inning, the Braves were down 10-1, but woke up with a furious rally that was fueled as much by aggressive baserunning as by hitting. With 1 out, Tyler started the excitement by drawing a walk. Nick ripped a hard single to center field. Matt singled up the middle, loading the bases. Scott's infield single scored Tyler. Jason blasted a pitch down the left-field line that became a ground rule double when the ball bounded out of play, bringing Nick and Matt home. Then, with Chris batting, both Scott and Jason (from second base) scored on a passed ball. Chris walked, stole second, went to third on Alec's groundout and stole home.
This all happened so quickly I'm not sure I got all the names right. The outcome was a 6-run inning, and a credit to the Braves' resiliency.
More highlights and notes:
Pitching: Evan put up a goose egg in the 4th inning, striking out a batter and helping himself by grabbing a ball in play and throwing to Tyler for the 3rd out.
Fielding: Jack, with a phalanx of family and friends watching in the stands, grabbed a flyout in right field, and made several smooth pickups at third base. Matt helped himself grabbing a pop-up on the mound, and Alec made a fine running catch of a flyball in center field.
Batting: Nick was 2 for 2, his other hit a booming double to center field. Ryan doubled, also to center field. Chris started our potential last-inning rally with a single up the middle.

Braves game rained out
Our game against the Orioles this evening was rained out, despite a loud "let us play!" cheer led by the Braves (with most other teams joining in).
The makeup is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, June 25, at 4:30 p.m.
We are hoping for better weather for our next game, Thursday June 18 at 4:30 p.m. against the Phillies.

Game Story: Braves 8, White Sox 1
The Braves put it all together Tuesday night, scoring seven runs in their last two at bats to break open a close game and defeat the White Sox, 8-1. The victory moves the Braves into a tie for second place in the Majors. Both the Braves and the powerful Phillies have six wins in eight games.
Tuesday’s victory featured power pitching, superb defense when it counted, and timely hitting. The pitching was especially impressive because the White Sox had been one of the highest-scoring teams in the league, averaging 10 runs a game.
Connor allowed no runs in the first two innings, fanning four White Sox. Alec took over in the third inning; the top of the White Sox order was coming to the plate. With one out and White Sox runners on first and third in the scoreless game, first baseman Chris made a diving stab of a soft line drive to get the second out and prevent the runners from advancing. The next batter smoked a line drive toward left-center field. It had two RBIs written all over it, but shortstop Jason leaped high – very high – and snared the ball in the webbing of his glove to end the inning with no White Sox player having crossed the plate.
The game was still scoreless in the bottom of the third. Matt led off with a single and advanced to third base on two groundouts. Then came a wild pitch, and Matt dashed for home plate, scoring standing up for the game’s first run.
Jason took over pitching in the fourth inning, holding the White Sox scoreless. When the Braves came to bat in the fourth, Connor led off with a booming triple over the right fielder’s head. Chris walked and stole second, and Alec rifled a single to the outfield to score both of them. Alec stole second and third, which enabled Ryan to drive him in with an infield single. Braves ahead, 4-0, after four innings.
The White Sox got a harmless unearned run in the fifth inning, and then the Braves’ bats got really hot. Jason and Scott hit singles; they both advanced on a passed ball. Connor lined a single to the outfield, driving in two runs, and then kept on running himself, scoring as the White Sox booted the ball all over the field. Chris lined a double to the fence in right center, stole third, and then trotted home when Alec got his second RBI hit. Four runs on five consecutive hits.
Chris strode to the hill in the final inning with a seven-run lead. The first White Sox batter got on base via an infield error, but Chris struck out the next three hitters to seal the victory.
A complete team victory – the best kind.

Updates: Tonight's game, Sunday's game
I finally received confirmation that our Sunday game will begin at 1 p.m. Players should be at Water Tower at 12:15 p.m.
Today [Friday June 5] I would like to have the players at Water Tower by 5:10 p.m. to ensure that everyone gets pregame hitting and fielding work. In addition, please make sure that your Brave brings some fluids. The guys get thirsty on these sunny days!

Updates: Practice notes and the ever-fluctuating Yankees game time
Updates from Coach Dave, summarized from the 95 emails he sent earlier today:
PLAYERS, WEAR YOUR GEAR: Please have your Brave wear his cup, sliding shorts and baseball pants to practice today. We will be working on base running and sliding (among other things).
TODAY'S (Thu June 4) PRACTICE: Today's practice will begin at 4 p.m. at the high-school softball field ... unless another team gets there first. The two higher-level teams that often practice there will be elsewhere this afternoon, so I'm hopeful we'll have the field.
Chris and I will be at the field by 3:40 p.m. If we can't get the field, our backup location will be Atwater School in Shorewood. I will call people right away if the practice has to be moved to Shorewood.
Looks like a gorgeous day for baseball!

I just got confirmation that the Braves-Rays game Sunday will begin at 6 p.m., not at 5 p.m. as is listed on the WFB Little League website.

Practice update: Swing hard, throw hard
Braves,
A good practice in the hot sun Wednesday, but our guys need to become more aggressive when they're batting -- the way they were in the first two games. Many of the players seem to be waiting for perfect pitches before swinging, but perfect pitches rarely come. Our motto for the next game should be "See it and hit it!" Anything you can do to reinforce that message at home would be great.
It was good to have Liam back on the field. He's a little rusty at the plate, but he made a nice catch of a tricky foul fly today.
FYI, it seems likely that the start of our game on Sunday, May 31, will be moved from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. to accommodate a makeup game at 4 p.m. I expect this to be confirmed very soon, but wanted to let you know now for planning purposes.
Practice again Friday at 4 p.m. Location is uncertain. If the high-school girls win their game Thursday, they will have a practice on the high-school field Friday and we'll have to look at Cahill or Cumberland. If the girls lose, however, their season is over and we can have the high-school field Friday.
As loyal WFB fans, of course we will be pulling for the girls to win on Thursday.

First of all, thanks to Karen Kimple for organizing the California Pizza Kitchen outing this evening. We had four families there, unfortunately NOT including Ms. Kimple herself. Karen had to stay home to tend to Connor, who is sick. We hope he gets well in time for Thursday's game against the Cubs!

It's an interesting schedule. We play four games during the first five weeks of the season, and then 12 games in the last 30 days of the season. Note that the May 22 game is gone from the schedule, and that the time of the May 17 game has changed from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
If any of the Braves have conflicts with any of these games, please let me know (if you haven't already).

Practice updates, makeup game discussion
Braves,
(1) Practice as usual Friday (May 1) from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The weather forecast looks fine. If the high-school softball field is in use we will practice at Cumberland (not at Cahill). It will be good for the guys to have one more practice before our game Saturday.
(2) From now at least until the end of May we will have practices every Friday and Sunday from 4 to 5:30 p.m., with days off on Sunday May 10 (Mothers Day), Friday May 22 (beginning of holiday weekend), and Sunday May 24 (holiday weekend). Our preference is always to practice at the softball field on the high-school grounds, with Cahill and Cumberland being backup locations if the high-school field is in use.
(3) Scratch the May 22 make-up game possibility. Too many of our guys will be out of town.
(4) Right now we have two games to make up (Phillies and White Sox). Because the Majors field is so tightly scheduled (lots of Minors games are being played there), there are very few available game slots. I have suggested to the Majors commish that the first two Tuesdays in June (June 2 and 9) at 4:30 p.m. would be times when we probably could field a team. If players have conflicts with those days, I hope five weeks' notice would enable us to minimize them. Games at 4:30 p.m. cause lots of problems for adult fans and coaches, but the most important thing is to get the games in so that the kids can play.
The Majors schedule is a mess, obviously. The coaches of the teams and Majors commissioner Darren Miller are working hard to find times when we can get postponed games played.

No game Thurs April 30; possible game Fri May 22
The Braves will not be playing a game Thursday evening, even if the rains hold off. This is disappointing, but circumstances make it unavoidable.
If you are interested in an explanation for the postponing of Thursday's game, read on. If not, don't bother.
Thursday evening the White Sox will have five players and two coaches at a church function. In theory they could have filled out their team with a few players called up from the Minors, but the Majors commissioner told the White Sox several weeks ago that the game would be rescheduled so they were not planning to play Thursday. (You may remember that I sent out e-mails exploring our players' availability for May 23 and July 2, dates that turned out not to work for us.)
The Thursday game was never taken off the official schedule, however, so we naturally assumed that the White Sox had arranged to play. This evening the Majors commissioner gave me the option of winning by forfeit Thursday or continuing to work to reschedule the game. A forfeit wouldn't help our players get the game experience they need and want, and in any case I simply didn't want a cheap win at another team's expense.
The Majors commissioner is proposing that we play the White Sox May 22 at 6 p.m. I hope we can make that happen. If not, June 2 is a possibility.
I tried to see if the Phillies would be available Thursday to make up our rained-out April 25 game, but five of their players had conflicts.
So we look forward. The early forecast for our new season opener Saturday morning (MAY 2) is good. Let's keep our fingers crossed that we will actually play ball!

Sunday practice cancelled, schedule updates

With standing water on all of the practice fields Saturday evening, a 90% chance of more rain overnight, and a 70% chance of thundershowers Sunday, we are canceling the practice we had hoped to have at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Meanwhile, we have been trying to reschedule our April 30 game to accommodate the White Sox, but so far it has been impossible to find a date that works any better. Lots of our guys would have had to miss a game July 2. So, barring further word from the Majors commissioner, we are planning to play that game as scheduled on Thursday.
It would be really useful to have one more practice before Thursday, so please check e-mail early in the day Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The first day that practice fields are dry enough, we will call a practice.
No word yet on when Saturday's rain-out will be made up.

Schedule change confirmed
FYI, we have received final confirmation that the May 30 game against the Dodgers has been moved to Sunday, May 17, at 3 p.m.

Schedule update: No Memorial Day weekend game
Braves,
We will NOT be playing on Memorial Day weekend -- too many of our players will be out of town.
We continue to explore ways to help out the White Sox, who will have trouble fielding a team for the game scheduled for April 30. One suggestion was to play the game on May 10, but that's Mothers Day and none of the brutish, insensitive men who are working on this problem wanted to propose a Mothers Day game to the families of their players.
